Farmhouse Shiplap Kitchen Vent Hood

Well, well, well, who do we have here?! It's been awhile... okay, almost a year. I apologize that you've had to endure my last post- "Our Springtime Farmhouse Front Porch" not only all last spring, but all summer, fall and winter, too! Leave it to me to wait until that last year-old post is actually seasonally appropriate again to write a new post : )

So! Hi! What up, blog world! Most of you probably keep up with me on Instagram, but if not, all is well in the Ten June world. We're still loving our farmhouse beyond belief and have been here for just over a year now! HDawg (5.5) and Little Lady June (4) are doing wonderful and we've got baby number three in the oven! Our third baby is a little girl and at 38 weeks pregnant now, I feel like she'll be here before we know it.

I get so, so many questions (almost daily!) about our kitchen vent hood, so I thought it was high time I share some details on it. And I promised in my kitchen tour post that I would share more information if you were interested... ye ask, ye shall receive! This is not a DIY post- neither David nor I built the vent hood, our amazing carpenter sub-contractor did. Those folks are so talented- they also did all of our farmhouse trim work, our built-in breakfast nook and LLJ's reading bed, among other things. So we didn't build this vent hood, but I did design the hood based on some inspiration and some ideas floating around in my noggin, so I wanted to share what I could.

In terms of the design of the hood, I knew I wanted something modern, streamlined and simple. I had the carpenters bump out the hood so it stood out a bit more from the cabinets (ie. not flush to the cabinets), but I also wanted it to blend in like it was part of the cabinet and not a completely separate piece.

Over our Verona oven (which, by the way, we love!) we installed the Faber Inca vent hood insert. First off, we really like this vent hood. It's powerful (our oven is not on an exterior wall, so the exhaust has to travel far) but not too loud. And I actually love the lighting options on the vent hood, as well- a great ambient light to leave on at night and a stronger task light while we're cooking. So once the vent hood insert was installed, we had the carpenters simply build a shiplap box around the insert. It spans from cabinet to cabinet to create that seamless look. And we took the vent hood all the way to the ceiling (like our cabinets) with the same trim work as our cabinets. That really created that unified look I wanted! For those of you wondering, the shiplap on the hood is painted SW Alabaster, just like almost every other part of my house (inside and out!).

Here's a close up view of the Faber insert.

To spice up the custom vent hood a bit, I had the carpenters add a piece of stain-grade wood trim around the bottom edge of the hood. I love that little detail! I stained the wood with a light coating of Minwax Early American, just like our keeping room vaulted beams in the adjacent room.

What's fun is that our kitchen and living room are open concept, so the stove sits almost directly across the large open space from our living room fireplace. Why is that fun? Well, because we cased the living room fireplace in the same pretty white shiplap as the vent hood! So it's a nice, unified look.

Needless to say, the kitchen is the absolute hub of our home and oftentimes where we find ourselves gathered as a family, with or without guests. It's been such a fun place to have such a special piece and we are in awe of our awesome carpenters who built the vent hood for us!

If I'm missing answers to any questions you may have about the custom vent hood, feel free to leave them in the comments and I'll address!

Our Farmhouse Kitchen: A Lived In Tour

Hey friends! I've been sharing tours of the new farm house (both here on the blog and over on Instagram), but most of those have been tours of the house empty, before we moved in. I figured it was high time to photograph the house now that we've been living in it for almost four months! So let's look around!

I filled our glass front cabinets with our daily dishes, which are a sweet blue and white porcelain dinner set you can find here. We got them (almost 9!) years ago at our wedding and I still love them every day. And now I get to look at them! I also added a few cutting boards, a banana stand (looks like someone needs to go grocery shopping...), plants, cookbooks and our countertop compost bin. A lot of you have asked me about that bin, I plan to do a blog post with details and my review soon (spoiler: I love it)!

Over on the other side of this wall of cabinets, we made a little coffee station. We've got our toaster and my new coffee maker set up here. It's like the go-to breakfast spot as we're headed out the door (the mudroom is behind this wall so it really is a walk-through as we head out the door!).

Back to the opposite end of the cabinet wall, you can see a peek of our pantry door (behind the empty banana stand! Someone buy me some bananas already!). The pantry basically is a little room which runs behind the counter and stove area. On the other side of the pantry, it opens up into our keeping room.

And this is the view of the kitchen you have from the open concept living room. All the heart eyes.

Then, of course, you have our big, beautiful island with our big, beautiful farmhouse sink. I still can't believe I get to wash dishes in here every day! This looks out to our living room and our covered porch. To the right of the island is our built in breakfast nook.

Finally, can we talk about the custom vent hood? Man, I researched and researched and researched the heck out of this vent hood. I feel like it deserves it's own post? The short version is that I designed it and our carpenter built it. It's basically a streamlined, modern vent hood cover with shiplap. Super technical description, ha. And a cute little wood accent piece. Don't forget that little guy, I think that wood accent makes the hood. Let me know if you have questions on the vent hood and I'll do a separate post!

So there you have it, my dream kitchen come to life. It feels so great that it's all ours and, truly, it feels like home. We've hosted many friends and family, cooked many family dinners and had many great moments in this kitchen already. I look forward to years more ahead!

Building Our Farmhouse: Tile + Grout Sources

Hey friends! Some of the most-asked questions about our new farmhouse so far are about sources and information for our tile and grout. So here we go! A full source list for all of the tile selections we made in our house. As an FYI, I sourced all of the tile myself (outside of the selection presented to us by our builder's tile installation company) for a few different reasons. I've got a whole post drafted which shares the pros and cons behind sourcing your own materials, coming your way! Let me know if you have any questions about the peaks of the rooms you're seeing and I'll answer them when I finish up the reveal for each room in the house. Until then, all the tile + grout sources coming right atcha.

A Farmhouse, Buffalo Check Built-in Breakfast Nook

Now that I've started decorating our new house (we've been living in it for about two months now!), I thought I'd share some "finished" (let's be honest and just call it "progress!") shots. So, yes, right now I'm jumping all over the whole wide timeline spectrum as I'm currently sharing posts from the building process, tours of the empty house right before we moved in and now photos of the finished spaces with furniture. Hot mess express over here, but I'm just so excited to share it all, so bear with me.

So today, on a Saturday morning when you're hopefully hanging around your breakfast table with your family, I thought I'd share our breakfast nook! We designed this little "L" shaped corner with a corner bench in mind, and had our carpenters build in the bench (which opens on hinges for extra storage) during construction. This space sits between the kitchen and the keeping room, so we wanted to tuck the table away in the corner so it doesn't block the flow of traffic. And now we've got an adorable, window-lined little nook for breakfast and, oftentimes, lunch! The kids love it and really enjoy having their friends over to eat with them in this space.

Two questions for you on the light: 1) is it too small? 2) should I paint it brass or ORB?) Let me know what you think and thanks for the insight! Sources below!

The Farmhouse: A Tour of the Kitchen

The kitchen. Ahhhh, the kitchen. This room is easily way up there in the race for my favorite rooms in the house. I love this room because it's open... lots of walkway space, lots of counter space, lots of seating... and classic- you can't go wrong with a black, white and brass scheme! I feel like I have so much to say about this room... I'm just going to start brain dumping about designing this room. If I miss anything, feel free to leave questions in the comments and I'll update the post!

I always knew I wanted a black and white kitchen (see here!), so it was a pretty easy choice to start with the cabinets. We chose a Shaker style white cabinet (which is eerily similar to SW Alabaster, an off-white) and mixed in glass and solid uppers. We wanted to max out our 9 foot ceilings in terms of design and function, so we added the 12" box cabinet on the top with 36" uppers under the box. Our island cabinets are black (by the way, our island dimensions are: 4' x 8.5'). All cabinets are made by Legacy, happy to share more details about which selection we made if anyone wants (I know some of you out there are shopping cabinets!), just shoot me an email.

Read all about the counter top selection right here.

I took a biiiiiig leap of design faith (way outside my comfort zone!) and mixed a bunch of metals in here. Probably more than is "allowed" (stainless steel! brass! oil rubbed bronze! polished nickel!) but I absolutely love the way it works together. I knew I wanted brass in this room, but I was scared to commit to anything too permanent or expensive, so we went with brass hardware. I took a tip from Studio McGee and chose polished nickel (instead of chrome) as it has warmer undertones and pairs more easily with brass or gold or bronzes. I actually extended this tip throughout my entire home... I love me some polished nickel!

We went simple and classic with miniature white subway tiles for the backsplash. I really wanted this kitchen to be relaxing and didn't feel like I needed a crazy backsplash competing for attention. I left the attention-grabbing to those majorly giant pendant lights I chose over the island ; )

As for appliances, we splurged a bit and bought mostly KitchenAid Pro products. The KitchenAid Pro gas range oven wasn't in our budget, so we chose this Verona dual fuel range and LOVE it so far. We typically bake in the wall oven and cook over the range, but we have also used both ovens at the same time a few times over the past few weeks since we've been here. Game changer.

Besides being open and classic (and having a giant island), I also always knew I wanted a desk space in our dream kitchen. I have just always pictured putting a desktop computer there and letting the kids do homework while I get supper ready, instead of letting them hole up in their rooms. It's also a great "drop spot" for clutter and mail that somehow doesn't find a place in the mudroom.

Did I mention the giant walk-in pantry? Talk about another game changer! I've got my counter top appliances lined up on some of the bigger shelves... I LOVE having all that space to organize the kitchen clutter and food!

I just realized that I didn't get any up-close photos of our custom shiplap range hood. Bad blogger. I promise I'll devote an entire post soon to that beauty. Also, I will say that since this photo, the shelves have been lined up with the mullions on the windows of the glass uppers... that drove me crazy then and drives me crazy just looking at these photos now!

I think that's most of the major elements, let me know if you have any questions! Sources below : )

Building Our House: Flooring and Counter Sources

Hi friends! I've had so much fun sharing the house with y'all so far. I've gotten a ton of questions about sources from the last couple of posts and Instagram... your main questions being sources for flooring, counter tops, tile and lights! Today I'll tackle the first two- our flooring and countertop selections.

First off, let me say that I jumped in and sourced most of the interior finishings for our house myself (instead of going through the companies our contractor recommended). It was quite the bear of a task, but in the end, I'm really happy we did it- we were able to buy what we wanted at a better price and saved some big money. I plan to write a separate post about the process of sourcing everything myself, though, so stay tuned!

C O U N T E R    T O P S :

In our kitchen, we chose a quartz material. We love the look of marble but it's such a porous stone that I was really worried about staining, chipping, etc. So we chose a quartz that looks a lot like marble. From what I understand, quartz is one of the stronger natural stone counter materials, and I can vouch- ours has already withstood the (accidental) tests of blue food coloring and red wine just fine! The brand is LG Viatera Minuet. We absolutely love it!

Our downstairs bathrooms (including the powder bathroom and our guest bathroom) have furniture type sinks, so those came with their own tops. But upstairs in the kids baths and our master bathroom, we went with an engineered polar white marble. It was a really inexpensive material that basically gave us a pretty, faux marble blank slate. We chose painted vanities in all the baths and really wanted those colors to shine, instead of the counter tops. And while the engineered marble is really pretty, it definitely doesn't try to compete with the cabinets, which is just what we wanted!

H A R D W O O D    F L O O R S :

We chose to do hardwood floors in our entire downstairs (except for the guest bedroom) and in our upstairs hallway. I. am. in. love. with. our. floors. Seriously, guys. One of my favorite things in the house. I am a big fan of gorgeous dark hardwood floors, but I knew that I wanted a) something easier to keep clean (dark hardwoods would show Tucker hair like woah!) and b) something a bit more rustic/farmhouse style. We wanted a wider plank and chose to go with engineered floors as they fit our budget the best. In the end, Mohawk's Woodside Hickory in Harvest Hickory (WEC89-65) was our choice. It's a hand-scraped hickory wood, so it's extremely hard and stands up to scratches and dents. But it's also already got a few nicks and dings in it which give it character... and also helps to hide any new scratches or dents! And I love the variation in the tone of the wood- lots of lighter spots with some golden areas and even some dark knotty spots. It just has so much character! We literally have loved this floor every single minute we've had it.

For our stairs, we had red oak treads that the paint crew stained to match the hardwood floors (I have no clue the color!). It's amazing how great they look together, especially with that Craftsman-esque chunky bannister!

Later this week, I plan to share more about our kitchen, especially since I gave you some sneak peeks today! What items do you want me to source next? Lights? Tile? Let me know!

Oh, 2015, You Were A Good Time....

I know we're already four days into the new year (heyyyyyy 2016! I'm ready for you!), but I did want to take a few minutes to reflect back on what happened here on Ten June this year.

In no particular order, here are my top ten posts from 2015.

Our rental house kitchen got an update with a quick DIY. I had no clue a sticker could be such a rockstar.

You guys are big fans of my Dream House series and my kitchen and dining room ideas are no exception. This makes me so excited to share my plans with y'all for our new house!

As always, you guys are so supportive of HDawg's food allergy issues. I love sharing his story because it I feel like it creates such a great community with not only other allergy moms but it also teaches those out there who may not know a lot about severe food allergies.

I tried my hardest to jump on the Whole30 train, but I failed. Big time. And I'm glad I did!

And, of course, the BIGGEST news (and my favorite post) of 2015.....

Thanks so much to all of you for reading Ten June in 2015. I know that this blog isn't quite as consistent or content-filled as it used to be, but I kind of like it's current pace. I like where I'm at. In fact, I love where I'm at! I'm a mom. I'm an attorney. I'm an interior design lover. I may not have quite as much time these days to DIY, but I sure do love sharing with you guys when I do! And trust me, 2016 will be filled with all kind of good posts on the process of building our dream home. I could seriously scream with excitement just saying that. Cheers to 2016!!
