Coloring in the Lines

Good morning! How is it already Wednesday?! Considering Monday and Tuesday both consisted of twelve+ hour workdays for both me and David, I guess I shouldn't be complaining. Come on, weekend!

A few weeks ago, I read this post on The SoHo (a greaaat blog read, check it out!), which showed some beautiful pictures of color-coordinated books. Of course, my little brain started ticking and I just had to try this in my house. So... I did!

Here's my disjointed Ikea Expedit office bookshelf before the mini-overhaul.

And now, with the color-coded rainbow system.

The green books.

The red books.

The black books.

The blue books.

Don't you just love it! A quick and FREE way to add a little fun to the bookcase! It honestly just flows so much better than the unorganized, disjointed look from before. I'm super happy with the big impact we got from this quick little fix!

If you're wondering about the lovely stripes on our office walls, be sure and check out our stripe painting tutorial.

  2. It looks great! I need more books (and a big ol' bookshelf) so I can do this. I'm a cheap ol' library goer and only buy school books, which I then resale. haha. I actually really like having books around, and I'm a big ol' bookworm, so I'm not sure why I'm so bookless.

Anyway- I will stop rambling in your comments now! LOL. It looks great!

  6. I think I might try this on my office bookshelves - they look awful, but I need most of the items frequently. So far, I've had organized by topic: legal, writing, managerial, people skills, communications, fun, junk (lol), etc..... but it just looks like a mess.

  13. I just did this recently to the bookcase in my bedroom. It's not the lovely cubed shaped bookcase that you have though. I think the way you piled some of the books horizontally really makes the whole thing that much more special. Enjoy!

  15. I usually never leave comments but I had to tell you THANK YOU!! I have a book shelf in my kids play room that has baskets of toys, their book, our book and pictures on it. I have never like the look of it, it always looked so mismatched and ugly to me. But I found your post of the rainbow organization of your book shelf and I used that idea to redo ours and it looks amazing and matches their playroom perfectly! Thanks for sharing your ideas!
