A Turquoise + Orange Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Birthday Party

Hi friends! I hope you guys had a great holiday weekend. We were on the go all day, every day but it was a lot of fun. On Saturday, David and I were so fortunate to have the opportunity to celebrate little HDawg's first birthday with a little shindig with our closest family and friends.

We held the event at my sister's house (Tori- the one getting married in November!). She has a beautiful home with an awesome covered porch and landscaped backyard. It was a beautiful setting!

Last week, I shared in this party planning post that we decided to base the party's theme from the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom children's book. It's one of HDawg's favorites- rhymes, bright colors and ABC's. The perfect kids party theme! And the best part? My sweet little H had a ball at the party, celebrating with everyone.

Here are some of the fun details from the day.

I decided to take a low key route and set up a taco bar for the party. HDawg's favorite foods are tomatoes, black beans and avocados, so this menu was perfect for the little birthday boy. And super easy (and affordable!) on momma. Plus, who doesn't love tacos?!

Many of the printables you see are from the company I shared here. And no, the banner did not say "HDawg," I just edited his name out for the blog... but that would have been cool, right? ; ) I didn't get a good photo, but I scattered alphabet magnets around the food and labeled each dish with a Chicka Chicka Boom Boom name, like "Skit Skat Skoodle Salsa" and "Dare Double Dare Bean Dip."

Don't you just love my sister's outdoor patio space? She and her fiance recently added it to the house... it's gorgeous, seriously. I need to do a post on it sometime soon!

I bought the balloons online at Amazon.

HDawg has a dairy allergy, so I wanted to make allergy-free cupcakes for his "smash cake." I decided to go ahead and take the homemade route for all the cupcakes, but luckily these were not dairy free!

Here are his sweet little dairy free cupcakes. Well, half dairy-free. He doesn't have too much of a problem with dairy baked into things, so I only made a dairy-free icing. I'd be more than happy to share the recipe if anyone's interested.

By the way, he loved the cupcakes. After shoving most of them in his mouth, he literally started bathing in cupcake and rubbed it across his belly. So precious. Hey, buddy. Cake makes me want to do that, too. Ain't no shame.

Oh and how cute are these GF cookies my sister-in-law made for H? "HDawg is my bro!" I love it.

I'll share a tutorial on his DIY "1" birthday hat and "H" shirt soon!

I made cute little goodie bags for the kids, mostly filled with ABC paraphernalia. It helps when you are throwing an alphabet-themed birthday party during back-to-school season, so many cute things from the dollar bins at Target!

Here's a shot of all of the kiddo guests wearing their personalized alphabet necklaces.

I'm pretty sure the kiddos weren't the only ones who had a ball. It was so special that H got to celebrate with our close family and friends. He loves his family! Here's a shot with his aunts (my sisters).

He's miserable when he hangs out with them, can't you tell? ; )

And here's our little family, so happy to be celebrating HDawg.

The party was such a blast. Thank you to everyone who helped us! We love you! And baby H... I cannot believe you are one already. Your first year of life has already been incredible, I can't wait to see what fun we have in store for us ahead!

PS. Since this is a holiday week, we're a little thrown off for Tuesdays at Ten June. Go ahead and keep sending me your submissions (email- tenjuneblog@gmail.com with the subject line "Tuesdays at Ten June" or Instagram- #tuesdaysattenjune) and I'll save them for next week!

  1. Awww happy birthday little man!! I'd love the cupcake recipe- my little guy will be one in 3 months (ack, where does the time go??) and he is dairy intolerant. Is Hdawg also gluten intolerant? I suspect my little guy is but haven't tested that theory yet.
