The Dream House: A Black & White Kitchen

Hey, hey. Welcome to the first post of 2015, friends.

I'm excited to start a new series today entitled "The Dream House." I don't get to do a lot of major decorating around our rental house these days but hopefully at some point in the near future, we'll have a new house of our own to decorate like crazy. Until then, I decided to lay out all of the ideas swirling around my head in a series of dream plans. Basically, if I was able to design my dream house now, this is how I would do it, room by room. Thus, The Dream House series is born.

On my brain today? The kitchen. True to my roots, I am thinking about a traditional white kitchen with some fabulous contrasting black accents. My dream kitchen also needs some kicked-up pattern and color in the form of rugs and art, as well as some natural texture with hardwood floors and some wooden open shelving.

rug, similar
white subway tile (can't decide... white or gray grout?)
patterned white plates, similar
white cabinets + black island via
reclaimed wooden shelves, similar
white farmhouse sink, similar

What do you think? Are you digging my traditional black and white kitchen scheme?

Neutral Chic Bedroom Design for Tiffany

One of my latest e-designs was for the stylish, sweet as pie Tiffany from Savor Home. We worked on her master bedroom together, incorporating pieces that she already has (like that gorgeous bed!) with new, chic pieces and planning a functional design for the space.

I think my favorite element in the room is the gallery wall of gold frames behind Tiffany's bed. It's tough to explain, but the wall behind the bed is an awkward, uneven wall which makes any attempt to center the bed (and anything hanging above it) on the wall look crooked. My thoughts were to cover the wall in these beautiful gold frames with chunky white matting to break up the uneven wall. Tiffany can fill the frames with art, black and white photographs... the possibilities are endless!

I'm also totally digging on the swanky velvet curtains, which I found here. Not only does PB have them in this gorgeous stoney gray, but a realllly pretty stone blue. Santa, are you listening? : )

I can't wait to see how Tiffany's space turns out! And lucky for me, she's an Atlanta girl, so I might just have to pop on over and see her bedroom makeover in real life! : )

E-Design for Nicole

Hi friends!! I'm excited to share another E-Design with all of you. Nicole asked if I could help her set up a design for her large living room/office area. She had a few items she wanted to keep in the room, including two brand new pillows that she had purchased from Pier 1. So, I based the room off of this pillow.
Here are some current shots of the room.

And here is the design that I came up with.

1- Fresh Fabrics- The colorful floral patterned fabric can easily be used to create some new artwork on the entryway wall. Nicole can simply cover the three canvases that are currently on the wall, stretching the fabric across the prints and using a staple gun to attach. The accompanying gray chevron fabric can be used to re-cover the top of the bench in the entryway.

2- Crisp, White Paint- I told Nicole to paint it allll white, girl! While gorgeous, it would look great if all of the natural oak colors went a bright, glossy white. This will really freshen up the room in a simple way. I told her to go aahead and break out the Behr white paint + primer for all of her trim, the inside of her front door and the TV stand.

3- Colorful Rug- This adorable jute rug from World Market will not only give the room a fun punch of that gorgeous turquoise color, but its material will stand up to the high traffic we normally see in living rooms (especially with two little ones, like Nicole!). My favorite part is that it's super inexpensive at only $150.

4- Comfy Couch- Typically I wouldn't recommend the more expensive Pottery Barn brand (especially with so many cheapie knock offs available!), but I have to say that this couch rocks. Definitely worth the splurge (although, just a heads up, it is on sale right now!). The light gray PB Comfort is gorgeous, comfortable and its incredible twill slipcover will stand up against all kinds of stains! (Trust me, I know- we have had our PB Comfort for just over a year now and it has defeated puppy dog hair, muddy paw prints and red wine!). And the light gray color will fit right in with the color scheme.

5- Gray & Blue Paint- The darker gray (Mindful Grey, Sherwin Williams) is perfect for the walls, to replace the current beige color. The lighter gray (Snowbound, Sherwin Williams) is a wonderful, light accent (very similar to the couch color) for some of your furniture while the turquoise paint sample (Holiday Turquoise, Sherwin Williams) is a bright accent color. Either color (in fact, both together would be great!) could be used to paint any of the accent furniture, such as the TV stand, entryway bench, the console table or the storage chest next to the fireplace.

6- Hardwood Floors- A darker, rich color will be such a great choice to tie in with the fresh, new look! Nicole already has plans to redo the flooring in this room.

7- Frame Gallery Wall- These frames are the Ikea Ribba frames. A beautiful gallery with 6-8 of these frames (filled with black and white family photos!) would be perfect along the wall above the console table, especially since it's the first wall you see as soon as you walk into the house. That way everyone can see Nicole's beautiful family, front and center!

8- Funky Pillows- All we need with the inspirational Pier 1 pillows are some solid-colored accent pillows, like these Crate and Barrel finds.

9- Glossy White Coffee Table- Continuing with the "freshen and lighten up" theme, this pretty coffee table is a steal from Ikea.

10- Pretty Accessories- The vases Nicole already has are perfect for her mantle! They work great with the white + colorful new design of the room.

11- Turquoise Side Chairs- Since I chose a comfy, neutral couch, I thought that these slightly-modern-yet-still-casual side chairs would be another delicious pop of color!

12- Parsons Chair Slip Cover- Even though the office is technically another room, I treated it as an extension of the living room and, thus, an extension of the living room's design. A white, comfortable slipcover would be a cost-efficient way to change the current leather Parsons chair and make it a little bit lighter and brighter.

13- Turquoise Office Rug- More color, more comfort. This inexpensive Overstock rug brings both to the office area.

14- Mirror- Nothing breathes more life, energy and sparkle into a room than a mirror. By placing this large mirror over the fireplace, it will open up this large room even more.

15- Crisp, White Paint- Just like number two above: white paint, white paint and more white paint! Or the paints I discussed in number 5, of course.

16- Light & Breezy Pendant- This basket weave pendant light brings a little fun into the office area, replacing the current traditional lighting with something a little bit funkier.

17- Expedit Shelf and Desk- I don't think anyone could combine style + function any better than the Ikea Expedit book shelf. Nicole can line her belongings on the shelves or throw them in baskets that fit into the shelves- either way, it's genius! Add the Expedit desk to the unit and, voila! You've got a perfect, functional office space area.

I also did a layout plan for Nicole, where I showed her some ideas and arrangements for the furniture and decor.

Whatcha think? Nicole loves it and I can't wait to see this amazing room transform!

E-Design for Tana

Yesterday was definitely a good blog day. For those of you non-tweeters, I'll fill you in. Basically, Jillian Harris and I are new best friends. Really! Or maybe she just tweeted me about yesterday's post on her condo makeover, either way. And I think she said my blog was cute. Oh yeah. How sweet is that?! I was pumped : )

Today I'm back atcha with another e-design mood board!

This one is for my girl, Tana. She emailed me and asked for some help with her dining room/living room space. Here's the basic rundown: she wants lots of pops of color to add to the neutral furniture and walls she's already got. Her main goal is to incorporate the two rooms and add a bit of a sophisticated touch.

My inspiration for the room is this color palette.

And here are some photos of the current space.

And here are my plans for the dining room space.

1- These adorable chevron curtains will add a little punch to the neutral walls.
I opted for a big pattern, rather than a big color,so that I wouldn't be competing with the other bright
colors in the room. Tana can DIY the curtains (just like Danielle did with the curtains pictured) and put them along the adjacent living room windows, as well.

2- Even though there is a lot of neutral in the room already, this neutral rug will allow for a fun,
colorful rug in the living room (see below for more on the living room plan).

3- In the spirit of using what she's got, I thought Tana could spruce up her current chandelier
with a coat of fresh, white spray paint. And voila! A new chandelier.

4- World Market has some gorgeous table linens these days, and this orange print is no exception.
Even though I showed a tablecloth in the mood board, Tana has the option to incorporate this print
through either the tablecloth, placemats, a runner or even simply napkins.

5- Tana wants to use her current table, which is a big gorgeous wood oval table.
She plans to refinish it with a dark stain, which I think would look perfect in the room.

6- These gorgeous milk glass vases would add even more beautiful, bright color.

7- The perfect way to add some sophistication to Tana's current table is with these straight-back,
clean lined Parsons chairs. These chairs can be found all over, like here and here.

8- My vote to add the biggest punch of color to her neutral walls is to paint her sideboard piece
a bright color, like this gorgeous kelly green version by Leah

And because many of these ideas are wallet-friendly, we can add a few new pieces to coordinate and add into her living room. Essentially, I'm pulling the new dining room color scheme into the living area.
Without redoing the whole room, we could simply add a few new pieces to incorporate the look.

One important piece would be the addition of a new colorful rug, such as one of these.

And we need to update the sofa with some new throw pillows, such as these.

Etsy
Crate and Barrel
Crate and Barrel
And we need some fun, colorful art to fill the large space along the opposite TV wall. I always love a good, cheap DIY project, so I think Tana should do something like Sherry and John's latest art project (I know I always reference them, but I just love me some YHL!) Tana could fill some white Ikea frames with colorful scrapbook paper that matches her amazing new color scheme!

I think Tana loves the new design and I can't wait to see the ideas implemented in her room!

E-Design for Megan (and Jimmy!)

Recently, I've had a few inquiries into my e-design services, so I decided to spend some time playing around with my mood board skills. I actually asked my girl Megan if I could help design a room for her because a) she's awesome like that and b) she's one of my top referrers, so it's kind of a thank you to her!

So, I redesigned her closet.

HA. If you believed that for even one second, you haven't seen Megan's closet! Go look, now! It's fab.

Actually, Megan and I worked on her media room. Otherwise known by Megan as "that big room with all of the electronics that my husband plays video games in or does whatever men do in a big room full of electronics." Ha! I know the feeling. Why DO men obsess over electronics and video games?!

My thoughts? Combine a "man cave" atmosphere with a little of Megan's sleek style (if that's possible?! it's a tough combo!). I also aimed to bring in a whole lot of texture to make the room fun and interesting.

Here's the breakdown.

1- Megan wanted a dark, rich color on the wall, so I chose this beautiful dark green/blue/turquoise/teal. I've seen it in a few places lately, including Sara's "Reflecting Pool" closet and Sherry and John's "Plummage" guest bedroom. It's such an incredible color that adds an instant richness to any room.

2- Because Megan's husband, Jimmy, is a University of Texas fan, I had to throw in some sports memorabilia. And this is a pretty cute little piece, if I do say so myself. You can find it here. It's a much better sports decor alternative than, say, a bobble head (I've actually had to fight David on those- anyone want a free Chipper Jones bobble head?!). I also pulled in the burnt orange color from the Texas gear as the main accent color for the room. I think it works perfectly with the wall paint color.

3- The hardest part about decorating a man cave? The accessories. I had a few boards set up with some adorable vintage books, a couple of baskets and a tray on the coffee table. David gave one look at it and said, "It looks good, honey, but what is all that junk for?" Guys... so, I kept the accessories low and opted for a few dude-centered coffee table books, like the GQ Magazine rated Cars book, this UT book and Sports Illustrated's The Football Book. Sound pretty manly (and functional!), right?!

4-  Oh, this lamp. Love it. So industrial chic. And found at Pottery Barn right here. (Oooh and guess what- it's on sale right now!!) Jimmy has a large projector screen in the room and so I didn't want to compete too much by adding a bunch of extraneous lighting in the room. I think this guy will do the trick. Keeping it real!

5- What fits in a man cave/media room better than a leather couch? A leather sectional. This Crate and Barrel version is a bit pricey, but you can find much less expensive versions on Overstock, like this one or this one. I can just see a bunch of guys piled up on this sectional, cracking open a cold one and waiting for the big game to start!

6- A neutral, durable jute rug adds just a little bit of pizazz with some fun texture, but certainly doesn't step on any toes to compete for the real drama of the room (ie. the wall color, the leather). Love this West Elm version (and price!).

7- Keeping it dude-friendly with some simple pillow choices, including large burnt orange throw pillows and accompanying ivory throw pillows to accent.

8- I can't get enough of this coffee table from World Market. Rustic, chic, industrial, functional. It's got it all.  I think it's the perfect fit for a room like this!

9- You can't have a media room without some movie decor. These amazing vintage movie posters can be found here for incredibly reasonable prices.  I couldn't decide between James Bond, Superman or Dick Tracy, so I picked them all!

10- At the request of Megan's awesome husband, Jimmy, I added a beanbag chair. And lucky him, its in Longhorn colors!! I told Megan we'll just pretend that its for baby James and not actually for Jimmy ; ) Ha! Seriously though, it's actually the perfect, comfy addition to the media room! Love it.

So there we have it! Megan and Jimmy's new man cave/media room. Whatcha think?!

Just for an idea, here's the room right after Megan and Jimmy moved in.

I can't wait to see it after they make some fun changes!

E-Design for Courtney

I got pretty lucky as a freshman in college (twss) because I was paired with an amazing roommate.

Picture this: southern-suburban-girl-with-hot-pink-plaid-comforter-and-tube-tops (hi) meets Connecticut-beach-girl-who-wore-linen-baggy-pants-on-our-first-night-out-in-college. You wouldn't have thunk it then, but it was truly love at first sight. And the beginning of an amazing friendship : )

Meet Courtney.

Yup, I picked one of the oldest and silliest pics of us that I could find. Cuz I'm cool like that.

My sweet Courtney is starting a new life in Manhattan with her fiance, Matt. And that includes a fabulous new apartment (well, not really new... a 1920's hotel that Babe Ruth used to stay in!). And, lucky  me, she asked me for some "whatcha think" advice as far as their new pad's decor!

So Court emailed me a few pictures of their new place and gave me an idea of what they are looking for.
Here's what she said: dark, romantic, contemporary, sexy and a little bit rock and roll.

(yes, we've both grown a little bit since our linen pants and hot pink comforter days!)

And she sent me a picture of some pillows that she wants to keep in the room. I decided to pull all of the colors out of those pillows, since I knew it was an element she definitely loved.

Here's what I came up with.

1- print  2- Benjamin Moore "Bittersweet Chocolate" paint 3- pendant  4- curtains  5- art
6- mirror  7- bedding  8- Court's pillows 9- ooh la la pillow 10- rug

It's all in there- romantic wall art (how great is that "extraordinary love print"!!?), dark and moody chocolate walls, a modern, sophisticated headboard, a glam mirror and all of their favorite colors from the pillows.

As for the headboard, I would absolutely suggest making that a DIY project (great tutorial here). That cuts down costs and allows for more expensive things in the budget, like the West Elm chevron rug.

And guess what? Court and Matt have already started painting their new bedroom. Check it out!

Looking good, isn't it?!?

E-Design for Chrissy

Sad news today, friends. Based upon Georgia's ridiculous ice/snow storm this week, my plumber (hi, Billy!) never made it out to do the 2-3 days worth of remodeling work we need on our master bathroom. He gave us some spiel about how his other clients get priority because their pipes burst with the cold and their houses are flooding with water. Psh. Obviously that plumber doesn't realize that we're waiting on him to finish up so that we can finish drywall and slap some tile up! Flooding houses? Really, Billy? Come on. Ha.

Billy and his crew will come out next week and work their plumbing magic. We'll just reschedule this weekend's drywall festivities to next weekend. Ah, well. The joys of remodeling!

***

On the upside, my dear friend Christine called me a few weeks ago and said: "HELP! I hate my bedroom. I can't do anything major or permanent because I'm a renter. What can I do to spruce it up?"

Okay. She definitely didn't say it like that. It was more like "Mich, work your magic. Thanks."

Like most of us, Chrissy is on a budget, so I really wanted to coordinate with all of the big-ticket items
(ie. furniture) that she already owns. By focusing on just changing accessories, you can change the
entire style of a room without a big dollar price tag to go along.

But before I show you what I came up with for Chrissy, I thought I'd go ahead and
embarrass both of us her with a montage of pictures. She's going to hate me.

Isn't she precious?! Love my Christine.

Chrissy lives in downtown Boston, in an adorable little apartment that sits in the heart of it all. Here are some (iPhone) shots of her bedroom as it currently looks.

As you can tell from the pictures, Chrissy is a gorgeous, stylish girl whose bedroom isn't up to par with her style. She needs a lot more sophistication and fun to match her! So I made her a little mood board.

As I said before, she already owns all of the furniture (or something pretty similar). I decided to go with a fabulous, sophisticated black and white scheme with some gorgeous pops of raspberry red.
And the best part? I can do it all for under $200.

Here's the source list (clockwise from the top):

White duvet- Ikea, $19.99
Striped sheet set- West Elm, $69.00
Throw pillows- Etsy, $19.95 each
Faux flowers- Ikea, $4.99
Wall decals- Dezign, $38.00
Striped runner- Ikea, $12.99
Love prints- Etsy, five cards for $12.00

Grand total: $196.87

Chrissy already has the adorable Boston print, which you can find here.

I think the black and white adds a little sophistication. And I loooove wall decals for an apartment-
I was thinking she could put the black damask print decals behind her bed, to set up a focal wall
(much like you'd do with paint or stencils in a permanent home). I also love the sophistication
and fun the raspberry color brings in.

Lucky for me, my dear Christine loves the mood board. In fact, she's already at work, redoing the room! I promise update pictures as soon as she's finished. I always love a good before and after!

What do you think? Do any of you need any mood board inspiration? Have any of you made one lately?
