Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

As I mentioned yesterday, I'm trying to mix it up around my house these days. Add in a little glam, some eccentric pieces, some sophisticated pieces, etc.

So, last night, I thought I'd get started on one little project while I was watching some
high-quality TV on the TLC Channel.

(okay- did ANYONE else watch the insanity last night on TLC with their new shows- the Extreme Couponing show or the I'm Addicted show where the lady was addicted to sleeping with her blowdryer?!! These people make me feel sane!!)

I decided to revamp our living room mantle. I'm not a huge fan of the marble tile on the front and I'd really love to paint the brick a bright white instead of the off-white color we inherited when we moved in. But that would require also painting all of the trim, crown molding, plantation shutters, etc. to match (that's what I call the "if you give a mouse a cookie syndrome"!!), so we'll have to wait for a rainy day for that one.

Here's what I've got so far.

These are just nine cheap-o Ikea mirrors ($2.99 each) and some sticky Command strips.

I still need to dress up the mantle with some accessories (I just got too distracted by the woman on TLC who was addicted to eating toilet paper), but I think it's headed in the right direction, don't you?

These pictures are a little on the dark side, but the frames around the mirrors are a dark brown/black wood grain color. I'm definitely still getting used to how dark they are, though... another thought is that I could always paint the frames a fun (lighter) color to lighten up the feel.

I love the antique ceiling tile mirror that I had on the mantle before, but, in my opinion,
it just didn't give a lot of pop or interest to the space. It kind of just blurred into the mantle. Right?

There's a strong possibility that I'll come home from work this evening and hate the "new" look, throw my antique ceiling tile back up and pretend like this little project never happened. But, I thought I'd try it!!

PS. Notice anything else different in the last picture?

  1. I like the new mirrors, the stand out a lot more against the brick. When you add some accessories I think it will soften the overall look. I say go with it girl!

  7. I like the mirrors! I like a large substantial piece on the wall over a mantel. That quatrefoil mirror I got was just lost in the space. And I'm going to need to see more pics of the pillows!

    Thanks for guest posting!!!

  10. I love the new mirrors! And...I've seen the commercials for the I'm Addicted show and I'm WAY too scared to watch it. Is it THAT bad? Like the girl who eats laundry soap scares me, ha!

PS. Love the pillow. I'm all for a patterned black and white pillow (:

  11. I think the new mirrors (great idea btw) give a lot more depth to the room and certainly a dash of sophistication. A completely different feel to the old mantle.

  15. I love the new mirrors and the pillow. Maybe you can give me some suggestions on my rooms at www.mysouthernlife.blogspot.com. I have posted the first two things on my list for 2011. I am trying to turn this house into a home.

  16. What a creative idea! If you end up not liking it in the long run, you're not out too much money, but I like the new look! I've been on the mirror hunt for ages! Was my son on that show?! He eats everything!

  17. I really really love them! I also think if you feel that it's too dark you could remove the top and bottom rows and just have one row of three? They'd also look great painted a distressed, dull silver! Happy New Year!

  18. Yes, I LOVE the new mirrors - I agree the other one did fade into the mantel (even though I also really like that one) :) I love the green next to it, I don't think you need much more on the mantel honestly - it looks great! I also watched WAY too much of TLC two nights ago!
